Flurina is amazing - her approach is non judgemental, informative and gentle
Hurray for Flurina !
The sessions are varied but most of all fun which our dog loves and she now actually looks forward to her training.
Flurina has exceeded all of my expectations (despite coming highly recommended) and I can’t recommend her enough - on top of this she’s a lovely person to boot. A pleasure to work with, thank you Flurina!
We now have a confident little dog and have continued to work with Flurina with both our dogs. We have attended her pack walks, 6 week course and paws in the city which has been great for improving their behaviour and socialisation.
I would not hesitate to recommend Flurina both Max and Malaika (and us) have benefited.
It got so bad that we were unable to walk our dog and her behaviour became such a huge and sad issue for us.
Over the sessions Flurina got to know our dog, Oona, and worked intensively with her to modify her behaviours by getting to the root of the issue and changing her perceptions of other dogs.
We are now able to walk Oona and understand her so much more. We are so much happier and confident.
I recommend Canine Sense and Flurina so highly. She has honestly changed our lives.
On top of all that Flurina is an absolute joy, a lovely person who I fully trust to help my dog now and in the future.
Obi was our first dog, we thought we were prepared but you can never be prepared enough i think with getting a puppy! We got absolutely overloaded with advice online, videos of what do do, tik tok trainers providing mixed messages, only doing training in a certain way and so forth which really confused us and stressed us out.
Obi is incredibly excitable (Goldens!) to the point we struggled to take him anywhere because he would not rest, be desperate to engage with everyone, whine and cause lots of problems and also at one point injured me because he would constantly try and pull too much on walks!
We had 4 sessions with Flurina and it absolutely transformed our relationship with Obi. He is still a adolescent so you still have to help manage him through crazy times but we have so much more engagement, trust, control and fun with him now we know how to have good times with him and what to do if he gets a bit too over excited.
We didn't realise how much training comes through play time, a lot of what you see online is to do so much with treats but that isnt everything you should do on its own. We have lots of fun training games with him now. He knows commands for when we are not happy with what he is doing so he now knows to stop. We know what to do when he gets a bit too crazy. We also now know he can be trusted off lead more which we did do a lot of already as his recall was good but we were not confident of him around other dogs. He is now growing into a really good adult dog thanks to the shaping and guidance Flurina has given us.
She also has helped clear up misconceptions around tools that get a negative reputation online such as a prong collar. Using this correctly with the right training absolutely changed the game for us. Obi has so much fun still but now knows what i am trying to tell him to do. He has no fear of it which is what online stuff made us believe. As we are using it the right way with really great training we now have full confidence and fun with him and Obi knows now what we want, he is having so much fun and actually looks way happier than before when we are out. He walks to heel and can maintain that even past distractions.
I cannot recommend Flurina enough. We now have a great adolescent dog that will grow into a great adult thanks to the work we put in with Flurina.

So many dog behaviours get misinterpreted — especially when excitement, fear, and prey drive can look similar on the surface.
Physiological signs like dilated pupils, rapid heart rate, panting, and a focused stare can appear in multiple emotional states. And with the growing trend of labelling most reactive behaviours as ‘fearful’ 😬 it’s easy to misunderstand what a dog is truly feeling — even when the behaviour is actually excitement, high arousal, or prey drive. 🔥
Jax’s hoover reaction is a perfect example. What you’re seeing is chase-driven, high-arousal behaviour 🎯 not fear or avoidance aggression.
Breeds like Malinois, Border Collies, Staffies, and many terriers often show this kind of chase behaviour toward toys, cars, moving objects, or even household items. That’s why context, breed tendencies, past experience, and the INDIVIDUAL DOG all matter. 🐕
Remember: even signals like “whale eye”, shaking, licking don’t always mean anxiety. Dog communication is individual too, just like ours.
Over the next few weeks I’ll share exactly how we helped Jax stop chasing the hoover — plus more breakdowns of similar behaviours.
If you’ve seen this in your dog, let me know in the comments. I love to hear the different stories. 😀

Most people mislabel this behaviour when they see it. Even trainers!!
I’ve helped dogs who were put on medication for YEARS because their reactions were misunderstood 🤯
…and certain ideologies were blindly followed.
What do YOU think is going on here?
No wrong answers — I want your honest read.

Out with the pack! Ember, Breeze, Jax & Luna on their Sunday adventures in the forest 🌳

Bang bang 🔫
I’ve come up with a new trick for the Rotties. Ember is being particularly dramatic!!
Did you notice how she lay down extra slowly? And do you know why?
Breeze generally loves to roll around in the grass, while Ember rarely does. This means Ember was a bit hesitant because rolling in the grass isn’t something she naturally prefers, whereas Breeze has enjoyed this exercise pretty much from the start since lying down in the grass is something she already loves to do.
Over time, though, the behaviour itself will become rewarding for Ember. I’ll share a video of this again in a few weeks, and you’ll be able to see the difference in her.
Ah and before I forget, what should I teach the Rottis next? 🤔 do you have something in mind?

Trust is a key element in training dogs. To earn that trust, we must show who we truly are. I don’t believe in tricking my dogs; I prefer to be honest and transparent about my intentions. In my opinion, many people give up too easily when faced with challenges. However, there is so much to gain when we choose to persevere.
I have researched the definition of trust and this is what I found:
“Trust is a fundamental aspect of relationships and social interactions, characterised by a belief in the reliability, integrity, and competence of someone or something. It involves a willingness to be vulnerable, as it often requires relying on others to act in our best interests without fear of betrayal or harm.”
Key elements of trust include:
1. Reliability: The expectation that someone will follow through on their promises or commitments.
2. Integrity: A belief that the person or entity will act ethically and honestly.
3. Competence: Confidence in the ability of the other party to fulfill their responsibilities or roles effectively.
4. Vulnerability: Trust often involves a degree of risk, as it requires opening oneself up to potential disappointment or harm.

Everyone starts somewhere 🌟
And my dog training journey has started a very long time ago in Switzerland. I’ve been lucky enough to have grown up with 6 dogs (Rough Collies at first, later Swiss Mountain Bernese) and other animals (ponies, ducks, geese, guinea pigs, cats, rabbits, tortoises) who have always played a crucial part in my life.
From a very young age, I decided to be the person responsible for the care and welfare of our animals. I loved making the effort to see our animals happy and fulfilled. Taking care of them has taught me so much – sometimes I wish I could turn back time! ⏱️
It was during this pivotal time in my life that Canine Sense truly began to take shape.
I devoted countless hours to understanding our dogs better so we could train them in the most efficient and ethical manner. The dogs became my best friends. 🫶
There was no doubt that I would devote my professional career to dogs. What better way to improve the lives of dogs than by teaching their owners what to do?
This prompted me to complete a full-time one-year Certified Dog Training School in Switzerland. At the age of 16, my work, methods and training were recognised and featured in the Thurgauerzeitung Switzerland Journal.
Nearly 20 years on, my sense of inspiration and curiosity remains as strong as ever. I have a deep passion for learning about dogs, and interestingly, the more I discover, the more I recognise how much there is still to learn (Dunning-Kruger effect)!
My vision is to help people connect more deeply with their dogs and truly understand their needs. I am passionate about guiding my clients towards achieving an unbreakable bond with their pets, a connection I have experienced countless times with my own dogs. 💕

Is a problem actually a problem or have we set our expectations of dogs unrealistically high?
Dogs can feel uncomfortable just like we can. Let’s treat them with the respect we’d expect for ourselves.

Are you a thrill seeker?
I certainly am.
Is this a bad thing? No, of course not.
I love the feeling of freedom, the adrenaline rush, and the satisfaction of overcoming challenges. These experiences inspire me to push further. It keeps me going and it makes me happy. Why? Because it’s simply who I am - it’s my personality.
And personality & genetics often determine what choices we make and how we respond in different environments. Past experiences matter too of course, but again, how those impact us is often linked to who we are deep down. In dog training this is VERY important.
Recognising personality and closely observing your dog to find out who they are is extremely valuable as it allows to shape the training in a way, that will make the dog feel really good.
How would you describe your dog’s personality?
Here a few words for inspiration:
- sensation seeker
- bold
- confident
- predatory
- timid
- go-getter
- sensitive
- impatient
- curious
- gentle
- affectionate
- sociable
- jealous
- happy-go-lucky
- independent
- insecure
- determined

I work with many clients who have adopted rescue dogs from abroad or the UK. Some have been very fortunate, while others have faced more challenges. Some dogs exhibit behavioural issues, others have health concerns, and some may experience both. I’m not trying to discourage anyone from adopting; I simply want to emphasise that one needs to be prepared for anything! Many dogs, especially those from abroad, have often been rescued from the streets and have had little human interaction. They arrive here very frightened and can struggle to adapt to our busy lifestyles.
Worldwide, the dog population is estimated to be between 700 million and 1 billion. Of these, roughly 75-85% are free-ranging (street, village, or stray) and may be unowned, while the remaining 15-25% are owned pets. In my personal opinion, it isn’t always in the best interest of these free animals to live as pets.

My girls - Breeze & Ember. The dream team as I call them as they truly are best of friends.
Many of my clients have asked me how they get on with Jax, my new puppy and the short answer is: they have fully accepted him as a pack member and from what I can see, they really like him and care for him.
Ember who has possessive traits (genetic pre-disposition) had to learn a bit more self-regulation as she could be a bit over the top the first few days 🤭 we have previously called her the ‘Breeze police’ and now she’s policing Jax too of course 😂 but in a nice way!
